Artists Laddie John Dill and Hirokazu Kosaka join TMR Deputy Director and Senior Curator Kris Kuramitsu to discuss the work and life of the late Matsumi Kanemitsu.

 

About the Artist Talk.

Artists Laddie John Dill and Hirokasu Kosaka remember the late Matsumi Kanemitsu. In a conversation moderated by TMR Deputy Director and Senior Curator Kris Kuramitsu, Dill and Kosaka speak about Kanemitsu’s unique practice and his contributions to LA’s creative community as a master printmaker, painter, and educator.

About the Participants.

Laddie John Dill (b. 1943, US) graduated from Chouinard Art Institute, Los Angeles in 1968 with a BFA. He then became a printing apprentice and worked closely with established artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jasper Johns. Dill’s work is included in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; High Museum, Atlanta, GA; The Phillips Collection, Washington DC; The Art Institute of Chicago; The Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark; and Colección Jumex, Mexico, among others.

Hirokazu Kosaka (b. 1948, Japan) graduated with a BFA from Chouinard Art Institute in 1970 and an MA in Theology from Columbia University. He is an ordained Shingon Buddhist priest and a master of the art of Japanese archery, and he has served as the Artistic Director of the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC) in Los Angeles since 1994. His solo exhibitions and performances include Hirokazu Kosaka: On The Verandah, Selected Works 1969-1974, Pomona College Museum of Art, Claremont, California (2013); Kalpa, The Getty Center, Los Angeles, CA (2012); In the Mood, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (1994); and Amerika, Jacob's Pillow, Massachusetts (1994) among others. Kosaka has received Fellowships from the Durfee Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, California Arts Council, and the California Community Foundation.

Kris Kuramitsu is TMR’s Deputy Director and Senior Curator.
