About the Artist Talk.
Ed Clark sits with TMR Director and Chief Curator Cesar Garcia to discuss his practice and the trajectory of his career. Through anecdotes and personal stories, Clark takes us to the Post-WWII period in Paris where he, along with many other American artists, found a vibrant creative community that deeply influenced their early work. Clark also shares his experiences after he returned to New York and tells of how he came to find his own approach to abstract expressionism.
About the Participants.
Ed Clark (b. 1926, US) was born in New Orleans and raised in Chicago. He attended the School of The Art Institute of Chicago and l’Academie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Clark has had notable solo exhibitions at Tilton Gallery, New York, NY (2014); The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL (2013); The Pensacola Museum of Art, Pensacola, FL (2007); The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY (1980); Donald Judd’s loft (1971); and Brata Gallery (1958), among many others. His was included in Blues for Smoke at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, which traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH (2012); Beat Culture and the New America at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY which traveled to the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, and the de Young Museum, San Francisco, CA (1995); and Black Artists: Abstractions at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, New York (1980), among many others. His many honors include the Legends and Legacy Award from The Art Institute of Chicago and a Painters and Sculptors Grant from The Joan Mitchell Foundation. His work will be featured in Prospect.3: Notes for Now, New Orleans’ international contemporary art biennial (2014). Clark currently lives in New York City.
