NeueHouse Hollywood | 6121 Sunset Blvd., LA, CA 90028

This is a past event.

TMR partners with Neuehouse for a conversation—moderated by TMR Director and Chief Curator Cesar Garcia—between Mexican artist Daniel Guzmán and LA-based artist Jim Shaw.

About the Conversation.

Artists Daniel Guzmán and Jim Shaw discuss their shared interest in comic books, punk music, myths, and popular culture and how these influences manifest in their approaches to drawing.

About the Artists.

Daniel Guzman’s (b. 1964, Mexico) sculptures, videos and installations are a reflection of a personal and intimate territory that emerges from such close examination of the culture and urban landscapes that surround him. With a strategic and contagious sense of humor, Guzmán shares the wide range of influences he has cultivated and through which he reflects upon his experience of the world. Guzmán earned his BFA in 1993 from the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Mexico City. Recent major solo exhibitions include Soup, Cosmos, & Tears, Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City (2016); Daniel Guzmán: Chromo some Damage, Drawing Room, London (2015); Daniel Guzmán: Materia Oscura, Museo de Arte de Zapopan, Zapopan, Jalisco, and MACO Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico (2011); Double Album: Daniel Guzmán and Steven Shearer, New Museum, New York, and Museo Universitario de Cienceias y Arte (MUCA), Mexico City (2008).

Jim Shaw (b. 1952, US) is a multidisciplinary artist and an icon of the Los Angeles art scene. His work explores the countercultures and subconscious of American society, interwoven with personal history. He received his BA from the University of Michigan and his MFA from CalArts. His work has been exhibited extensively and has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at venues that include the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams, MA (2015); New Museum, New York, NY (2015); Chalet Society, Paris, France (2013); Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Netherlands (2013); and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK (2012) amongst many others. In 2013, Shaw was included in The Encyclopedic Palace at the 55th Venice Biennale curated by Massimiliano Gioni.
